SLOVAKIA – THE HEARTH OF EUROPE is best known for its raw beauty of its countryside. Aside from hundreds of natural wonders, crystal-clear lakes and wild forests, visitors enjoy Slovak rustic villages, out-of-the-way castles, outdoor air museums (skanzeny), high-altitude chalets and cabins.

DUBNÍCKE OPAL MINES
The unique deposits of precious opals are located at Dubník, in the center of the northern part of the Slánske hory mountain range (about 35 km from the Domaąa dam). The opal deposits at Dubník are a unique phenomena even from the world-wide aspect. There is no other place in the world where opals were extracted through mining to such an extent and so long ago.

Herµany Geyser
The village Herµany is placed in the skirts of Slanské vrchy ? a mountain range. It is approximately 40 km far from the Domaąa dam. It was well known already in the 17th century for its mineral springs. This fact was a cause of establishment of the local spa. The mineral springs were not sufficient for the demand for mineral waters in the year 1870. Because of that was begun to make a bore which resulted in creation of a world unique ? geyser of Herµany.

WARHOL MUSEUM
Andy Warhol said famously that he was from nowhere. His mother was from Miková, a village close to Medzilaborce (about 30km from the Domaąa dam). In Medzilaborce the museum was opened on Sep. 1, 1991. The museum was founded on the initiative of Andy Warhol?s brother John, the arts teacher Dr. Michal Bicko, Vladimir Protivnak and the Club of Friends of Fine Art at Medzilaborce (FFAM).

Slovak wooden churches
An important example of folk architecture lies in this region - northeast Slovakia. The wooden churches, 27 of which are national cultural monuments, date back to the 18th century, when the Hapsburg monarchy, in a fit of counter-reforming zeal, banned the use of stone in non-Roman Catholic churches. The churches have shingled roofs, and one, two, or three onion-domed towers. Some are stained dark brown. The majority were built by Rusyns between the 16th and 18th centuries. Most are Greek Catholic and still in use.

Nature of Vranov nad Topµou
Thanks to the geographical position of the district Vranov nad Topµou its countryside is very interesting and divergent. The southern part belongs to the Východoslovenská níľina lowlands, which is clearly distinguished from the massif of the Slánske vrchy mountains are formed by andesite and pyrites.
